The “overrepresentation of Man” is a critical theory concept developed by Sylvia Wynter (2003) arguing that a specific, Western, bourgeois, male, and white construct of the human has falsely positioned itself as the universal definition of “humanity”. This ethnoclass perspective excludes, marginalizes, or subordinates other modes of being (race, gender, and non-Western perspectives).

Key Aspects of the Overrepresentation of Man
- False Universalism: The concept suggests “Man” is a localized cultural construct that masks itself as the universal “human”.
- The “Othering” Process: The overrepresentation of this specific group necessitates the creation of an “Other”—groups deemed non-human, less-human, or “dysselected” (racialized or impoverished).
- Origins: Wynter traces this to the Western Renaissance, evolving from a theological “True Christian” vs. “Idolater” binary to a secularized “bio-evolutionary” standard in modern times.
- Impact on Knowledge: This perspective dominates fields like science, literature, and economics, perpetuating inequality.

Contextual Application
- Coloniality: The concept is key to understanding how European power structures were justified by declaring other populations sub-human or uncivilized.
- Humanitarianism: Research suggests humanitarianism can perpetuate this by establishing a Western, biopolitical, and secular “Man” as the savior and the standard human subject.
- Modern Technology: Some scholars argue that modern “tech-hegemony” (AI and big data) acts as a new iteration (“Man3”) that reinforces these disparities. Wiley +4
Wynter calls for “unsettling” this view to move beyond the current “ethnoclass” conception toward a more inclusive understanding of the human species.
And here we are, still in the construct of “coloniality” as other human beings in other countries are being reduced to SUB human or uncivilized. I wonder if those who belong to this idea of WHITE or EUROPEAN ever examine their on ideas, concepts, thoughts, behaviors to see where they have been shaped to view others as sub-human and uncivilized because of differences in religion and culture.
