Women’s History Month: Behind Hollywood on the Set Scenes

By Tokunbo Salako  with AP   •  Updated: 14/03/2023

Given the enormous success of Everything Everywhere All at Once at the Oscars, you could easily be forgiven for missing one of the night’s other significant and memorable moments for women.

The ceremony also saw costume designer Ruth E. Carter become the first Black woman in history to win two Academy Awards.

Four years after winning Best Costume Design for Marvel’s Black Panther, she took home her second honour in the category for its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

As lead costume designer, Carter played a crucial role in making the film a cultural phenomenon with her garments helping to bring the fictional country of Wakanda to life.

Here is a partial article about the history of black women in costume design by Shelby Ivey Christie. Link at the bottom for complete article.

Until the late 1950s, black actors appeared on screen mostly as slaves or domestic workers, leaving little room for creative costuming. Hattie McDaniel’s Oscar-winning role as Mammy in 1938’s Gone with the Wind is a prime example of this kind of caricature casting; her wardrobe was marked by a house dress, an apron, and a headscarf. Similarly, when James Baskett appeared as a plantation worker named Remus in 1946’s Song of the South—a role he won an honorary Academy Award for—he did so in the type of plain, tattered pieces synonymous with poor blacks at the time.

1957: Carmen Jones

“I’d have to say my favorite costume moment is Carmen Jones,” shares Stacey Beverly, a Hollywood costume designer who’s worked on GirlfriendsThe Game, and Black-ish, among other projects. The 1957 classic stars Dorothy Dandridge as Carmen Jones, a factory worker who, outside of her blue-collar job, wears a now-famous look: a curve-hugging red pencil skirt and black off-the-shoulder top. This was significant—not only were audiences seeing a black woman portrayed outside of a domestic role, but that black woman was also the epitome of glamour, dressed in luxe fur coats, dresses cinched at the waist, and hoops (gold hoops, to be specific, which were not de rigueur in 1957). Dandridge made history as the first black woman nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award, and while she didn’t win, her portrayal of Jones did succeed in sending an empowering message to scores of black women.

1966–1968: Batman and Julia

In 1966 Eartha Kitt was cast as Catwoman in Batman—a role that saw her costumed in a tight leather catsuit and mask, bringing the sex appeal and allure of black women onto the small screen. Two years later, when Diahann Carroll became the first black woman to star in a TV series by landing the title role in Julia, the milestone was also a seminal moment for black costume design. A widowed single mother—which many black women could relate to, as the U.S. had entered the Vietnam War three years prior—Julia had an impeccable wardrobe reflective of the times. As the ’60s ushered in a fashion awakening that saw a departure from classic A-line silhouettes and an embrace of mod styles, Julia was costumed in swing dresses, paisley prints, and leisure suits; her hair was worn in the short, asymmetrical cut popularized by Vidal Sassoon, and she completed her looks with round-toe shoes and nude lipstick. Black women finally saw themselves as active participants in American pop culture and trends. They weren’t just the women who scrubbed the floors and burped the babies, they were now professionals, earning their own money and curating trendy wardrobes. Mattel partnered with Carroll to create a Julia Barbie, and in 1969 Carroll won a Golden Globe for the role.

I love fashion and I wanted to be a fashion designer growing up. It was the only dream I had had for a very long time. It still burns within me. I like anything that involves clothing. However, costume design in on another level of creativity and imagination to me.

RA BLOG: Crochet One

What have I been up to? I taught myself to crochet a few months ago. I really enjoy doing it and it may take me longer to complete a project because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia. The good thing about this is that I can take my time and go as slow as I want. I can work on something when I feel like. I can do a little at a time and I sometimes I wear my braces for my carpal tunnel or my compression gloves. It’s difficult to work with those on but, it helps the pain and I do sleep in braces. Anyways, I just want those of you who have may issues with your health to be encouraged and to try the things you thought you would never be able to do. I am not a clock and I can rest my hands or go days without crocheting. Here are few things I have made. Oh and that’s my beautiful cousin modeling!

Fashion Confetti: Consignment Shops

IMG_20170512_132022

Let the record show, I am really good at this! (LOL) or just very fortunate to find such great deals to enhance my wardrobe. This Le Suit jacket is a separate and retails from 59.99-79.99 and to get it, and it fits perfectly, for 24.99 was awesome. It will add a big pop of color to outfits. The pants below are by Kasper and I saw them for about 69.99-79.99 printed patterns. 9.99 is what I paid. I wore them for mother’s day as I opted for the cool and casual mom look. I added my 6.98 top from Target, a purse that was a gift from someone years ago, and Nine West shoes from TJ Maxx that I already had in the closet. I really like those shoes. IMG_20170512_132132.jpg

Fashion Confetti: Shopping Off Seasons

We took a trip to Iowa and I went to a Goodwill store there. They had coats and Jackets on sale. I paid 13.99 for the St. John’s Bay, lined, double breasted coat on the left and the 5.99 for the corduroy jacket on the right. I will have them dry cleaned and put them away until the Fall/Winter. It pays if you are on a budget to check out some of these shops. I donate clothes to the Goodwill, Salvation Army, and thrift stores. I also consign. My mom always gave and she told us to never give something you wouldn’t want to wear. So, I make sure it’s in good condition and sometimes it’s brand new. There are people out there who do this and that’s how you find some great items. Both of these are excellent quality and excellent condition.

Just a few items from Target clearance. I wanted a few black and white tops for church and other dressy to casual outfits. I think you can do miracles with black and white pieces. It was a challenge to get a great shot of the black sheer blouse! (but it’s so so cute) And I really like the cropped sheer black and white blouse/top.

Fashion Confetti: From a Friend

20170219_091725.jpg

This pale pink purse by Aldo is a favorite of mines. It was given to me by a dear friend for my birthday. She wasn’t sure if I would like it or have something to wear with it. Ha! I found so many things and ways to accessorize this purse. My first time carrying it was with this black and white dress, pointy flats, and black and gold jewelry. I thought it was a nice combo as we are near spring. It’s a subtle pop of color and I like it.

I need a pair of dull black heels, no shine, and very comfortable. Many time my illness can make my very high heels impossible. These are peep toe and comfortable, stylish, but just like a woman, I still need a pair that is not peep toe lol! Men don’t have so many options, so I think they are not qualified to ask “Why do you have so many shoes?” There are so many colors, so many occasions, so many…options….. (ha ha ha….but true!). I purchased them from JCPenny’s. A $60 pair of shoes on clearance for $17.99. Liz again and they feel so good to my feet. Also, I want to point out that before my illness I always varied wearing my heels, which I like high. Wearing high and very high heels can damage your feet, toes, knees, hips, and back over a period of time. I think this may be one reason I can still wear them with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I had surgery on my foot a few years ago because of Rheumatoid. So, take it from a shoe fanatic…every day, 8 hours a day, is not a good look. Give your feet a rest. Treat them to pedicures, massages, cute flats and fly sneakers.

I always thought going into Talbots with my Mom as a child was for the classy and mature crowd. I go  with her and I am starting to find some things I like. Am I getting older??? Of course! But my style has always been hard to pin down. Especially, since I go with how I feel and the occasion. Talbots makes you feel so special when they wrap your items! This was and amazing deal 59.50 for 11.85!!!! Faints…

Last Sunday was extremely cold in my city. I wore my camel colored thrifted corduroy jacket I think it was either $4-$8. The fingerless gloves were from Urban Outfitters in a clearance bin. Jeans are from TJMaxx at $24.99 (This brand of jeans are always between 19.99-29.99 and the brand is D. Jeans New York). The boots are the $22 dollar pair of knee high boots caught last year on sale at Dillard’s (clearance!). INC long sleeve t-shirt was half off at a Macy’s One Day Sale. Jessica Simpson leaf earrings were on clearance at Dillard’s. Necklace was on clearance from Target.

She sports a natural mohawk and minimum makeup (laughing as I type that!). A Vince Camuto dress purchased at the Macy’s in Las Vegas three years ago for…brace yourselves fashionistas….49.99!!! It was on clearance and in my size! I love this dress because it is really a fall dress and gives the fall so much warmth. It has a belt you that you can wear with or without to give the dress a different look. Also, the sleeves can be worn long or 3/4. The gold chain that ties or not, just gives it class and sass. The shoes are Steve Madden and the purse was borrowed from my mom. She purchased it at the Coach Outlet Factory. I love the way this dress moves on me. Vince Camuto is one of my favorite designers.

Fashion Confetti: Let There Be Boots

Classic Nine West Boots I’ve had for over 15 years. I purchased these and a black pair during a clearance at DSW with mom. Yes it was that long ago. No I am not that old lol! These cognac colored boots are always a conversation piece and are always complimented. I thought I would not be able to wear them after a surgery on my foot due to RA and Osteoarthritis. I am still able to wear these more comfortably than before. They are not as high as my other heels.
